Adeline had been an obsession before this. But now, after touching her, after learning what it feels like to be inside her body, obsession is too weak a word for what I feel for her. I’m not sure a word will ever exist that can define what bloomed to life.

Now this is how you write a villainous hero! It has been a while since I came across a dark romance that captivated me quite like The Danger You Know by Lily White. The sort of book that creeps into your thoughts at the oddest moments, making you wish you had your Kindle within reach so you could sneak in another chapter. I found myself looking forward to every opportunity to return to Ari and Adeline, and goodness, what a deliciously depraved journey this turned out to be! Lily White delivers a romance that is vicious, disturbing, intensely sensual, and strangely beautiful in ways that only a well-written dark romance can be. There is no pretending that the hero is anything other than what he is, no convenient softening of his edges to make him more acceptable, and certainly no attempt to dress up his sins as something noble. And I loved every minute of it!

Sean Hayden, better known as Ari, is an assassin who kills for money. It is during one such assignment that he crosses paths with Adeline Cabot, a young woman whose father happens to be his target. What should have been another job becomes the beginning of an obsession that consumes him in ways even he cannot quite comprehend. Ari begins watching Adeline from a distance, learning everything about her, from her habits and preferences to the smallest details of her daily existence. Years pass, and while Adeline continues living her life, Ari remains a constant, unseen presence in the background. His fascination with her is not some fleeting attraction or a passing fancy. It is something far more elemental, an obsession that has taken root so deeply that the very idea of walking away from her becomes almost unbearable. Yet when Adeline chooses a future with another man, Ari attempts, in his own rather questionable fashion, to respect that choice. The trouble is, how does a man who has spent years making a woman the centre of his existence simply stop?

Ari is, without question, one of the most fascinating villainous heroes I have encountered in a long time. He is a stone-cold killer, unapologetically ruthless, calculating, possessive, and entirely comfortable with the darkness that defines him. There is no tortured insistence that he is secretly a good man beneath it all. He knows exactly what he is, and more importantly, he makes no promises about becoming someone else. And yet, for all his depravity, there is something utterly compelling about the way he loves Adeline. His obsession extends beyond wanting her physically. He wants to know everything about her, understand what makes her happy, and see her become the woman she is capable of being. The contradiction is delicious. Here is a man who can take a life without hesitation, yet the thought of Adeline losing her spark is something he cannot bear. And his masculinity? Good Lord! Effortless, commanding, and so intensely sexual that this man should come with a hazardous warning sign and a fire extinguisher. Seriously, Lily White, what have you done?

Adeline, meanwhile, is a heroine whose journey I found equally compelling. She is not someone who begins this story fully aware of her own strength or desires. Her life unfolds over the years under the weight of expectations, relationships, and the choices she believes will bring her happiness. There is a vulnerability to her that makes her easy to underestimate, but beneath it lies a passionate, spirited woman who has not yet discovered the full extent of what she wants from life. What I particularly loved was the contrast between the Adeline who tries to fit herself into the life she believes she should want and the woman who emerges when she is finally allowed to express herself without apology. Ari sees that side of her long before she does. He recognises the fire beneath her carefully maintained exterior, and his fascination with that part of her is as intoxicating as it is unsettling. He is absolutely right about one thing. Adeline is magnificent when unleashed!

The relationship between Ari and Adeline is anything but conventional, and that is precisely what makes it so compelling. Their connection is rooted in secrets, surveillance, an extraordinary imbalance of knowledge, and a darkness that would be terrifying outside the pages of a romance novel. Ari knows Adeline intimately long before she has any reason to know him, and his conviction that she belongs to him raises all sorts of uncomfortable questions about possession, consent, and the difference between love and obsession. But Lily White does not shy away from those questions, nor does she try to convince the reader that Ari’s behaviour is remotely normal. His fixation is disturbing because it is supposed to be. What makes the romance so addictive is watching a man who prides himself on control become increasingly consumed by a woman who has no idea just how thoroughly she has gotten under his skin. I kept waiting for Ari to truly lose that legendary control of his. To let Adeline see just how unhinged she makes him feel. Because for all his confidence and ruthlessness, this woman is his greatest weakness, and I wanted to see every last bit of that delicious madness!

One of the things I appreciated most about The Danger You Know was the contrast Lily White draws between Ari and Grant, the man Adeline believes represents the sort of stability and happiness she should want. On the surface, the distinction between them could not be clearer. Ari inhabits a world of violence, secrecy, and moral depravity, while Grant appears to offer the respectable, ordinary existence that society considers desirable. Yet the longer the story progresses, the more uncomfortable those distinctions become. It raises a rather fascinating question about what truly makes someone monstrous. Is it the man whose darkness is obvious, who makes no attempt to disguise his nature, or the man whose respectable exterior conceals something far less admirable? I loved how White explores this contrast without pretending that Ari’s crimes are somehow absolved by his devotion to Adeline. He remains dangerous. He remains a killer. But the way he sees Adeline, values her individuality, and wants her to flourish makes for a compelling examination of what it means to truly know another person.

And then there is the heat! Good heavens, the heat! The sensuality in this book is every bit as vicious as the story itself, and I mean that in the best possible way. Ari is not a man who does anything by halves, least of all when it comes to Adeline. There is a raw, almost feral quality to his desire that suits his character perfectly. The intimate scenes are intense, unapologetically dirty, and charged with the sort of possessiveness that makes a villainous hero so irresistible when written well. But what makes them particularly memorable is that they are never entirely divorced from the emotional turmoil between these two characters. There is tenderness buried beneath the brutality, vulnerability beneath the control, and a desperate need for connection that neither can simply dismiss. The result is a romance that can be painful in ways that linger long after you have put the book down, yet beautiful in the most unexpected moments. I absolutely adored that Lily White never glosses over the uncomfortable parts or attempts to make the relationship more palatable than it is.

What also impressed me was how thoroughly the author commits to Ari’s characterisation. Too often, I find that villainous heroes begin a story as deliciously dangerous men, only to undergo such a dramatic transformation in the name of love that they become almost unrecognisable by the final chapters. Not Ari. His devotion to Adeline does not suddenly turn him into a law-abiding gentleman with a newfound respect for conventional morality. He is still the same ruthless, morally bankrupt man who first captured my attention, and that consistency is one of the greatest strengths of this novel. I did occasionally wonder whether his confidence in his own ability to control every situation bordered on arrogance, particularly when it came to the people surrounding Adeline. And there were moments when I wanted him to stop observing, stop calculating, and simply surrender to the madness of wanting her. But those were frustrations born of how invested I had become in him, rather than any dissatisfaction with the writing. Ari is not a hero who needs rescuing from his darkness. He is the darkness, and Adeline is the one woman capable of making him feel something beyond it.

The supporting characters and the tantalising glimpses into their lives were another aspect I enjoyed. Lincoln, in particular, left me curious enough to wonder whether he has a story of his own, while the glimpses of Rebecca made me want to know more about her as well. Lily White has a way of introducing characters who seem to carry entire histories within them, even when they are not the focus of the narrative. And despite the darker themes, the story never felt like it was trying to shock merely for the sake of shocking. There is purpose behind the cruelty, the obsession, and the difficult emotional territory the characters must navigate. I found the pacing wonderfully absorbing, and there was something almost addictive about the way the years of Ari’s obsession gradually gave way to the more immediate intensity of his relationship with Adeline. Every time I thought I had a handle on him, another glimpse into his twisted mind would leave me wanting more.

The Danger You Know was an absolutely mesmerising read. It is not a story for readers who need their heroes to be redeemable or their romances to exist within comfortable moral boundaries. There is violence, obsession, manipulation, and a degree of depravity that will undoubtedly be too much for some. But for those of us who occasionally crave a truly villainous hero, one who does not apologise for what he is and whose love is every bit as dangerous as the man himself, this book is something special. Lily White gave me a hero who never needed to become good to be unforgettable, and a heroine whose greatest transformation comes from discovering the freedom to be entirely herself. Five glorious stars, and not a single regret!

Recommended for: Readers who love unapologetically villainous heroes, obsessive stalker romances, morally dark love stories, scorching sensuality, and heroines who discover their own fire.

Final Verdict: He was never the hero of her story. He was the danger, the darkness, and the obsession that consumed them both. Ari is villainous romance at its most deliciously depraved.

“Why are you here?” I whisper against her frustrated mouth, my neck arching up now that her head is above mine.
I will make her say it.
She needs to say it.
“Why do you keep asking me that?”
Locking my hand over the back of her head, I keep her from moving away from me. My fingers curl into her dark hair, our lips parted and brushing together as our breath combines into a stew of aggravating temptation.
“I just wanted-“
“Wanted what?”
She growls, and the tiny sound plucks at the corners of my lips, but then the monster in her comes out, Adeline’s rebellion against my attempt to control her knocking me so off balance that I lose the war when she presses her mouth against mine and sweeps her tongue out to snap the last thread of restraint I have left.

Pulling away, he presses his forehead to mine, his fingers tangling in my hair as our stares lock.
“Did you taste that?” he asks, temptation swirling behind eyes of the lightest grey.
Chest heaving with the struggle for air, I ask, “Taste what?”
His lips curl, not into a smile. Not him. But enough to let me know he’s just won this game. “How sweetly you surrender.”

“You shouldn’t look at me like that, Adeline. It’s an invitation for me to take everything I want.”
I realize that even though he’s played my body into shattering apart twice, I’ve never touched him once.
Hating how husky my voice is, I point out the obvious. “You had the chance, but walked away instead.”
He chuckles at that, the sound empty of humor. “Maybe I’m trying not to destroy you.”
Stepping into the room, I lean back against another crypt, the short iron fence and burial plot of Samuel Rinehart between us.
“You have a high estimation of your skills in bed.”
He blinks, thick black lashes lining eyes of molten steel. “That’s not what I mean.”

Before he can leave the room, I call out to him, my voice much stronger than it had been. “Why are you here, Ari? Why can’t you just leave me alone?”
He stops, his hands tucked in his pockets and his face angled down. I study his profile as he takes a few seconds to answer. It sounds like a confession, something spoken more to himself than to me.
“You have no idea how badly I wish I knew the answer to that question.”

I can’t do this…
Not again.
This would be the last step to undoing all I’ve worked to accomplish, like this decision will be the disaster that decimates everything I’ve become.
Poor little Adeline wants Ari so bad she can taste it. But grown up Adeline can hear the ticking of a bomb, can sense the certainty that it’s only a matter of time before it explodes.
I turn around and head in the opposite direction, only to have fingers lock down on my arm, my body tugged down a darker, narrow hallway I hadn’t noticed.
My back slams against the wall before I can complain, a hand locking over my throat as Ari’s mouth closes over mine with such male possession that I open for his tongue to slide in, his taste like the sweetest of poisons sinking slowly into my veins.
Fingertips drag up the back of my thigh, and I tremble in place.

“Who the fuck are you?” I scream. Not giving a damn about how much it hurts my throat, not caring that it causes the pounding in my head to become harder.
“I’m Ari. The same man you met in the cemetery. The same one you danced with at the company event. The same -“
“The same fucking man that got the shit kicked out of me by playing a game against my husband.”
Tears burst from my eyes, stinging everything they touch. I can feel the skin splitting open again beneath my bandages, dried blood tugging against the cotton as fresh drops seep from the wounds.
I expect him to deny it. Expect an argument that I’d chosen to cheat, and it was my fault what happened. But that’s not what he does.
“Your husband is going to die for what he did to you. I promise you that. And I’ll never forgive myself for having a part in it.”
He pauses. Lets his words sink in.
“But that’s not what’s important right this second. You need to calm the fuck down before you hurt yourself more.”

She’s asleep.
She doesn’t know I’m here.
When her lips part on a whispered please, I forget the world has rules.
I may have a conscience when it comes to Adeline, but my sense of morality has always been skewed.
When she touches me like this, so innocent and ignorant of the shadow that looms over her, I don’t see what’s wrong in taking what I want.
Judge me.
Hate me.
I said you would.
But sometimes even the ugliest of stories can be beautiful, and ours has been fucked from the beginning.

She’s desperate. Wanton. Wild.
There’s not one ounce of shyness in the way she moves, no inhibition, no self-conscious bullshit, just a drive for everything primal, everything filthy, everything raw.
She’s as open as I knew she would be. Unashamed. So fucking hot and bothered that I’m helpless but to take advantage.
I’m a bastard for it, too, but you already knew that.

My eyes fly open to find Ari sitting in his usual spot on the floor against the wall.
He’s only wearing loose pants, his muscular shoulders and chest bare to my gaze, his abdomen with so many ridges, I curl my fingers into my palms with the need to trace them.
Legs bent and slightly apart in front of him, he leans his head back against the wall, his forearms balanced on his knees, a cigarette clutched between his fingers with wisps of white smoke swirling up like snakes.
His mouth opens and smoke slowly pours over his lips.

He’s right. I can’t hide from him, and for some fucked up reason, it turns me on more. I feel so exposed. So bare. So vulnerable.
And that sick side of me likes it. Not because he’s taken without asking. But because he’s giving me permission to reveal all my ugly parts without fear he’ll run from them.
He likes the ugly parts most.
He already knows them.

I barely have time to take in all the details of his private domain before I’m being directed to the bed, my body stretched over the mattress as he captures my wrists again and straps them to the headboard.
My eyes lift to his, my body trembling with both want and fear of a man who is still very much a mystery.
“Why do I have the feeling you do this often?”
He laughs softly as the corner of his mouth quirks. Glancing at me, he tilts his head just slightly.
“Why is it so impossible for you to believe that you’re the only one?”

I open my eyes to see him staring down at me. And for the first time, I think that I like when he watches me.
Despite it all.
Despite his questionable morality.
I’ve always sensed him around. Always felt comforted by it.
And I’m no longer sure I want him to stop.

“Keep dancing, Adeline. Tease me some more and see what happens. I’ll always take what’s mine, this body, your thoughts, every breath that fills your lungs belongs to me.”

“How did you do this? It’s a bit creepy, Ari.”
Just a hint of a grin. “I never tell my secrets.”
“Well, I’ll need all of it if I’m going to piss off Grant. Hopefully, the asshole has a heart attack as soon as he sees the news reports. It’ll save you the job of having to kill him.”
With a tilt of his head, Ari’s eyes narrow. “Now why would you want to deprive me of something I’ve been looking forward to?”
I think I’m falling in love with him.
Or maybe I have already.
