Tower by Claire Kent kicks off her Post-Apocalyptic Fairy Tales series with a retelling of Rapunzel unlike any other. Set years after the asteroid Impact that decimated the world, it is a story of survival, power, and the kind of love that can only bloom in the ruins. Kent takes a classic premise; a woman trapped in a tower who rescues herself by offering herself to the strongest among them, thus twisting it into something grittier and more grounded in human fragility.
Hailey has spent the last three years hidden from the world, her father’s protective paranoia keeping her locked away from the chaos outside. When he dies, she is left defenseless in a landscape ruled by violence and scarcity. Her solution is as pragmatic as it is desperate: she seeks out Levi, the leader of a local biker gang, and offers herself in exchange for protection.
He is definitely not the shining prince she dreamed of as a child, but a man hardened by loss and exhaustion, who agrees to her terms without illusion. Their arrangement begins as purely transactional, sex and safety traded in equal measure, but what grows between them is slow, tender, and entirely unexpected.
Levi is rough, tattooed, and gruff, but there is an undercurrent of quiet weariness that defines him. This is a man who has seen too much, fought too long, and now survives more out of duty than hope. His protectiveness toward Hailey does not stem from possessiveness but from a deep, almost reluctant humanity. Hailey herself is a wonderful mix of naïveté and resolve. Though inexperienced in the world’s cruelties, she is far from weak; practical, observant, and brave enough to walk straight into danger if it means retaining control over her fate.
What unfolds between them is a strangely intimate romance built on need and mutual respect. Their early encounters are mechanical, even awkward, but Kent slowly turns the dynamic inside out. The transactional becomes emotional; protection turns into devotion. The post-apocalyptic backdrop makes every touch and every word feel more precious because survival strips away all pretense.
Yet, while I appreciated the emotional growth, I could not help but feel that the story lacked some of the intensity Kent usually brings to her heroes. Levi, despite his quiet strength, feels subdued, less the alpha protector and more a man simply tired of fighting. The raw, gruff magnetism that often defines her male leads gives way here to a softer, more subdued energy.
Still, Tower succeeds in its atmosphere and tone, bleak yet hopeful, sensual yet restrained. The power imbalance between Levi and Hailey, which could have felt exploitative, is handled with Kent’s signature sensitivity. She never loses sight of Hailey’s independence as a person, even when the her choices are limited by the brutal world around her. And when emotion finally pierces through the stoic exteriors of both Levi and Hailey, there is a quiet joy that unfurls along with it.
Recommended for: readers who love gritty, slow-burn post-apocalyptic romance with strong heroines, weary protectors, and a touch of fairy-tale.
Final Verdict: Tower re-imagines Rapunzel in a world stripped of fantasy, where survival is the only currency and love is the rarest luxury of all. Gritty, sensual, and quietly hopeful.
Format: E-Book Read with: Kindle Oasis Length: Novel Genre: Contemporary Romance POV: Third Person, Dual Series: Orsini Brides, #2 Publisher: Harlequin Hero: Rio D’Aquila Heroine: Isabella Orsini Sensuality: 🔥🔥🔥 Published On: January 01, 2011 Started On: July 20, 2024 Finished On: July 21, 2024
Sandra Marton’s The Real Rio D’Aquila takes readers into the glittering, high-stakes world of the über-wealthy. Rio D’Aquila has lived a life few can imagine, rising from the gutters of Italy, reinventing himself in Brazil, and turning his name into one of immense wealth and power. He is a man who thrives on control, whose reputation precedes him as ruthless in business and incomparable in bed. But when he meets Isabella Orsini, his carefully constructed world begins to unravel.
Their paths cross through Isabella’s family connections, and from the very start, their relationship is shaped by a case of mistaken identity. Isabella does not realize exactly who Rio is, and he allows her to believe otherwise. For a man who has built a life where everyone sees only the billionaire, being able to step into the role of “someone else” gives him a rare freedom. For Isabella, meeting Rio under this guise makes him feel disarmingly approachable, someone she can lean on at a time when she is the most vulnerable. It is this unusual foundation, paired with undeniable chemistry, that draws them together and sparks a passionate affair neither expects.
Rio is thirty-two, a classic Marton hero; gorgeous, commanding, and utterly commitment-phobic. He is the kind of man who has everything money can buy but nothing that truly matters. Isabella, on the other hand is not the wide-eyed innocent many of Marton’s heroines tend to be; instead, she carries her own scars and insecurities, making her someone readers can both root for and empathize with. Their chemistry is immediate, their attraction undeniable, but what makes the story stand out is how Rio finds himself smitten from the very start, even as he grapples with the lies he has allowed to stand between them.
Their relationship is complicated by a tangle of half-truths and secrets that hover between them. Rio is, in many ways, two men: the boy from the streets who knows hunger and hardship, and the man he has crafted into one of absolute dominance and success. When Isabella enters his life, she sees glimpses of both, but Rio’s reluctance to bare his entire self puts them on a collision course. Watching Isabella navigate this storm of emotions while trying to trust a man shrouded in shadows makes for much of the novel’s tension.
What I liked most about this story is Rio himself. Marton wrote him as smitten from the beginning, which meant he never strayed into the territory of a cruel or irredeemable hero. Instead, he is a man who cannot quite reconcile who he once was with who he is now, and it makes him both fascinating and enigmatic. My one gripe was that the angst didn’t run as deep as I might have preferred, which I wanted more of given Rio’s layered past and the potential for emotional clashes, I found myself wishing for more intensity at certain points.
That said, Marton knows how to weave tension, sensuality, and the push-pull of emotions into a narrative that keeps the pages turning. While not my absolute favorite of hers, it still delivered on the promise of a romance that entertained.
Recommended for: readers who enjoy mistaken identity tropes, self-made billionaire heroes, and heroines who become their undoing.
Final Verdict: The Real Rio D’Aquila delivers passion and heart, even if I longed for a touch more angst.
Format: E-Book Read with: Kindle Oasis Length: Novel Genre: Contemporary Romance POV: Third Person, Dual Series: Pemberley House, #1 Publisher: Self-Published Hero: Vince Darcy Heroine: Liz Berkley Sensuality: 🔥🔥🔥 Published On: March 26, 2019 Started On: January 13, 2024 Finished On: January 18, 2024
In Want of a Wife pairs two rival antique buyers in a slow-burn romance where business, family legacy, and unexpected emotional baggage complicate what should havebeen a straightforward competition.
25 year old Liz Berkley is determined to save her family’s struggling antique business. Meanwhile, 29 year old Vince Darcy, recently returned home after the death of his father, is equally determined to honor his own family’s legacy by stepping up for their antique shop. Their shared passion for the trade ignites sparks of both rivalry and attraction—and when a steamy fling starts to feel like something more, neither is quite prepared for what follows.
Liz is the type of character who is sharp, observant, and quietly anxious, always carrying the weight of responsibility for her family’s store. I think we can all relate to how that can be. She thrives in the world of estate sales and flea market deals, driven by both passion and necessity.
Vince, on the other hand, is the more stoic of the two. With a finance background and an analytical mind, he left a promising corporate job to help his mother and take care of the store in the wake of his father’s death. Beneath the surface, he grapples with grief—which also harbors a deeper pain, a shadow that lingers over much of his emotional journey.
While Liz and Vince begin with mutual attraction and business tension (as do most protagonists), their attempt to keep things physical and casual quickly falls apart as real feelings surface. Vince’s reticence—rooted in past trauma and a naturally reserved personality—clashes with Liz’s expectations and emotional needs, creating a rift that requires honesty and courage. Their professional rivalry and tangled family connections (including a complicated link through Liz’s sister) makes things messier.
I really enjoyed the setting—antique sales and estate auctions added a fresh flavor to the usual small-town romance backdrop. Liz was easy to root for, and Vince’s brooding, wounded energy made him a compelling, if not always easy, hero. Their chemistry was believable, especially once they dropped the pretense of it being “just sex.”
That said, I didn’t enjoy this as much as I had hoped to. The dual POV, while offering insights into both characters, seemed to drain some of the emotional punch. I found myself less invested than I usually am with heroes as crafted by Ms. Adams. Vince’s introspection was necessary for his arc, but it made the pacing feel uneven at times. Also, I remember picking this up before and abandoning it partway, which tells me it did not hook me as strongly as her best work does.
That said, Ward and Em’s story teased in the background seems like one I would really enjoy!
Recommended for: Readers who enjoy rivals-to-lovers, quiet heroes with emotional depth, family business dynamics, and stories where casual flings turn into something deeply meaningful.
Final Verdict: From antiques to affection, this is a warm, slow-burn romance between two guarded hearts who weren’t looking for love; but then again, isn’t that the best kind?
Format: E-Book Read with: Kindle Oasis Length: Novel Genre: Contemporary Romance POV: Third Person, Dual Series: Standalone Publisher: Harlequin Presents Hero: Jack Marchant Heroine: Ashley Jones Sensuality: 🔥🔥🔥 Published On: June 01, 2011 Started On: November 11, 2023 Finished On: November 12, 2023
First published in 2011 by Harlequin Presents, Sharon Kendrick’s The Forbidden Wife draws readers into a hauntingly beautiful romance set on a remote northern moor, evocative of classic Brontëan stories with a modern twist. Ms, Kendrick outlines that she drew inspiration for this novel from the same, and I loved the romance that blossomed between two equally scarred protagonists for the most part.
The story follows 18-year old Ashley Jones, who has spent her life in care and foster homes, struggling alone in the world. Her loneliness and the need for a sense of belonging is palpable and it reaches out to you as you delve deeper into her psyche and character. When Ashley arrives at the isolated Blackwood Manor for her new live-in job as an author’s assistant, she is undoubtedly wary and overwhelmed. Her mysterious employer, Jack Marchant, is not only handsome and wealthy but also carries a deeply tortured soul, guarded by an air of dark sophistication that makes Ashley feel like she is from another world.
From the beginning, Ashley’s vulnerability is what makes the reader as well as Jack drawn to her. She is not only haunted by her past but also by the need to be loved, from the trauma of a childhood having gone without. As she begins to fall for Jack, her heart reaches out to the imposing and emotionally scarred man that is Jack, and you can sense the impending disaster that looms in the future. Her compassion shines, even as she views herself as a “drab nobody” in comparison to Jack’s formidable presence, which constantly makes her question why Jack is drawn to her in the first place. Her innocence and sense of isolation and loneliness makes her need for a fresh start at Blackwood Manor all the more desperate—a role that is not without its drawbacks, as the bleak, desolate landscape mirrors the stark loneliness she feels inside.
Jack, for his part, is a compelling character, though he does often hold all the power in their relationship. He is a brooding, wealthy figure with echoes of Edward Rochester, which Kendrick cleverly modernizes and brings to life. |There is an undeniable sense of Jack’s hidden torment that drives his aloofness, a secret Ashley can’t quite reach, which makes the reader quite desperate to know what makes Jack tick and what secrets he hides. This mystery adds tension to the story, making it a compelling page-turner. Yet, for all the chemistry they share, Jack’s reluctance to truly open up leaves Ashley in the dark, a dynamic that often feels one-sided, which made me want more from Jack as a character.
One of the story’s strong points is Kendrick’s ability to convey Ashley’s complex emotions, particularly her internal struggle with self-worth and desire. However, as outlined earlier, their relationship feels imbalanced, with Jack holding all the cards and rarely giving Ashley the confidence boost or love she truly deserves. Ashley’s transformation is subtle, but the fact that Jack does not ’t actively contribute to her growth made me bring down the rating of this story to what it was. This lack of reciprocity might leave some readers feeling that Ashley’s needs are not quite met, considering her difficult past and longing for connection.
Ms. Kendrick’s inspiration from Brontë’s Jane Eyre adds richness to the story, drawing insight from a classic tale of forbidden love while modernizing elements to fit contemporary romance. It’s a delicate balance of passion and secrets, with a moody setting that only heightens the intensity of Jack and Ashley’s interactions. However, the story ultimately lacks an essential spark, with a lingering sense that something crucial—something elemental—is missing. While it does deliver a good read for the most part, I definitely wanted more from Jack than he was able to deliver – but therein perhaps lies the true draw of this story when all is said and done.
Recommended for fans of Sharon Kendrick and those who love a good spin on a Brontë’ classic!
Final Verdict: Darkly atmospheric with a Brontëan influence, The Forbidden Wife is a deeply moody romance that lingers on the edge of mystery and passion.

‘We’d… we’d better get back,’ she stammered, and yet her legs felt as if they were rooted to the spot and she’d never be able to move again. ‘Why?’ She raised her eyes up to his. ‘Because—’ ‘Because of this?’ Without warning, he pulled her into his arms, expelling a shuddering breath as he felt that first collision with her soft body. ‘This damned thing between us which won’t seem to go away?’
He pulled her even nearer, so that the physique she had secretly admired from afar was now moulded firmly against her. And despite the clothing he wore she was acutely aware of his rampant masculinity—of the growing need at the very cradle of his body. It should have been daunting, and on one level it was—and yet on another it felt as if her entire life had been spent waiting for this moment.
‘Did you have a good time in London?’ she questioned politely. He made an impatient little sound beneath his breath as all his pent-up desire for her began to spiral up, astonished to find that his hunger for her hadn’t abated—despite his determination that it should. Despite the fact that she had pushed him away and that deep down he kept telling himself that it had been the best possible outcome for everyone. But knowing that did nothing to quieten the insistent thudding of his heart—or the sudden jerk of lust at his groin.
She was so used to seeing the autocratic set of his proud features that sometimes it was difficult to imagine that he’d led others into battle. He had seen what most people would never see in a lifetime, nor wish to. But she caught a glimpse of that man now. War was elemental but so was sex—and she saw a flash of raw emotion tighten his features. It was difficult to say what that emotion was: a curious hybrid of anger, desire and something else—something which kept Ashley frozen to the spot until, without any kind of warning, he pulled her up from the chair and into his arms. His breath was warm against her face and she could feel his powerful hands imprisoning her waist. ‘Why are you such a meek little mouse, Ashley?’ he bit out, his eyes blazing black fire over her skin. ‘Who cares what is “appropriate”? For once in your life—don’t you long to reach out and take what you really want instead of standing on the sidelines and letting it pass you by?’
With one hand, he unclipped her bra and then slid her briefs down over her trembling thighs. ‘You know that your skin,’ he said unevenly as his lips brushed over the hollow at the base of her throat, ‘is like purest silk.’ ‘Is it?’ ‘Mmm. If I could make a shirt from it, I’d never take it off.’
‘Jack,’ she cried out as he pulled her down towards a dark, sweet vortex before tossing her out again, helpless on the tide. At first he was gentle with her, his movements slow and seeking as she relaxed into him. And then his movements became harder and faster, his kiss more hungry and intense. She felt like a piece of elastic which was being stretched and stretched—until at last it snapped and she cried out his name. And only when her back began its helpless arch did he begin to shudder within her, his arms tightening as he cradled her, his quickened breath fanning her bare shoulder until gradually he stilled. I love him, she thought fiercely as she clung to him, feeling the moist-satin of his sweat-sheened back.
‘Damn you, Ashley Jones,’ he said softly as he pulled her back into his arms. ‘Damn you for your soft understanding and your perception. Don’t you know that by offering me freedom, you have guaranteed my willing capture?’ ‘That wasn’t my intention.’ ‘You think I don’t realise that? That you are totally without guile?’ He gave a short laugh. ‘I could put it down to your youth and inexperience—but it goes much deeper than that.’ He stared deep into her eyes and lowered his voice to a murmur. ‘You just have these instincts which make you remarkable and which make me hunger for you. I want you, Ashley, and I want you now.’

He staged a predatory assault upon her senses, determined, ruthless, driven by a fierce passion that overwhelmed every inhibition she had ever had.
Karen Robards’ “Ghost Moon” is a suspenseful and emotionally charged novel that weaves together elements of romance, family secrets, and chilling mystery. The story begins with a haunting scene from 1969, where a young girl is murdered in her sleep, a girl who had been terrified of the monsters lurking in the shadows. This tragic event sets the stage for a tale that spans three decades, culminating in a gripping narrative of past and present that meshes well together.
26 year old Olivia Morrison, returns to her childhood home, LaAngelle Plantation, after a prolonged absence. As a single mother, Olivia brings her eight-year-old daughter, Sara, back to a place filled with painful memories and unresolved emotions. Once the glamorous and rebellious member of the prestigious Archer clan, Olivia has fallen on harder times and is barely making ends meet. Her return is anything but uneventful, as she is immediately confronted with family tensions, especially with 37 year old Seth Archer, her step cousin that she had faithfully followed around until things had gotten complicated between the two.
Olivia’s homecoming stirs up long-buried memories that haunts her, including the trauma of her mother’s death, and the family dynamics that left her feeling like an outsider. Her struggles to reconcile her past mistakes with her present, and forge newer bonds with the family that she had left behind, made me root for her wholeheartedly.
Meanwhile, the darker elements of the story continues, with chilling accounts beginning from 1979 of young girls kidnapped from their beds. These incidents, echoes eerie similarities to the murder that sets the opening stage of the novel, and brings to the story a different kind of tension that winds the reader up as the story progresses. The recurring theme of young girls fearing monsters in the shadows underscores the lurking danger which echoes patterns of parents being dismissive of their fears as mere fantasies until each and every one of them are taken, never to be found ever again.
Ms. Robards masterfully captures Olivia’s complex emotions as she navigates the memories of her mother’s mysterious death and her difficult past with Seth. The chemistry between Olivia and Seth is tangible, their shared history adding delicious nuances to the story which I reveled in. Seth, who once acted as a protective older brother, now finds himself battling his renewed attraction to Olivia, despite his engagement to another.
Obviously the one factor that I thoroughly loved was the friction between Olivia and Seth and the push and pull that draws them tighter together. There is no denying that both feel the same way about the other, and the delivery on that front I would have to say, was classic Ms. Robards, who does a mean job on the built-up sexual tension in her novels.
While Ghost Moon delivered a great story for the most part, I felt that it occasionally faltered in its pacing. I for one would have loved to learn more about the villain and their backstory, as they brought a facet to the story that kept me intrigued throughout. I am always keen on understanding well crafted villains, as much as I adore the main protagonists and want to know as much my heart desires about them. What makes the villain tick? What made them into who they are in the stories? What role did society play to create such monsters to begin with? I would have loved to learn more on that score.
Recommended for fans of romantic suspense, with a good dose of spicy romance on the side, along with the family theatrics that keeps the pages turning.
Final Verdict: Ghost Moon is a compelling read that blends romance and mystery with a Southern Gothic flair and an eerie undertone of lurking danger of the heart pounding variety.

‘‘Seth,’’ she whispered, unable to help herself as her chin tilted up and her mouth moved infinitesimally closer to his. ‘‘Better?’’ he asked, and his voice was hoarse. His gaze slid from her eyes to her mouth and back. Olivia nodded. Her breathing had quickened, and so, she saw, had his. From her shoulders down her body was so close to his that they were practically fused together. Some of it was her fault—she pressed against him like they were two halves of the same piece of Velcro. But his arms were wrapped around her, too, and he wasn’t letting her go.
‘‘Jesus Christ, Olivia.’’ His voice was thick, hoarse, almost unrecognizable. This time he moved, pulling her up on tiptoe as his mouth came down on hers. His mouth slanted across hers with fierce hunger. His tongue slid between her lips, touching hers, possessing her mouth. Olivia kissed him back just as fiercely, opening her mouth for his taking, possessing his in turn. She couldn’t get enough of him, just as he, it seemed, couldn’t get enough of her.
He took her fiercely, driving into her with an urgency that made her strain and buck and writhe in frenzied response. Her hips arched up off the bed to receive him. She shook, and clung, and at the end, when the firestorm took her, cried out his name. ‘‘Livvy,’’ he groaned in response, huge and hard and hot as he thrust into her trembling body. ‘‘Ah, Livvy.’’

It Takes a Thief by Anne Stuart was one of the most highly anticipated novels for me in 2022 from an author who remains on my top shelf of go-to authors due to her exceptional flair for writing dark heroes that most romance readers don’t find affinity with.
I know that there are many authors of today who label themselves as writers of dark romance because their stories feature heroes from backgrounds such as the mafia. However, those authors don’t really live up to the hype and buzz that their books create amongst a wider audience. Heroes who are truly dark are written by authors like Ms. Stuart who captures in most of her books, the essence of what it means to be a villainous hero in its finest sense.
Published in June of 2022, told in the third person from the perspective of four characters, two main and two secondary, It Takes a Thief is a novel in a historical setting, featuring the story of how 23 year Emma Louise Manchester wins over the heart of her long lost step-brother Ben Crawford, aka Nick the Butcher.
It is unfortunate circumstances that reveals to Emma that her partner in crime up till she was eleven years old when Ben had been kicked out of the family home and seemingly lost to her forever, is in fact alive and thriving, albeit in a criminal setting. It is common knowledge that Ben is the leader of the Beggar’s Ken, of which the name itself signifies what the “organization” does.
Betrothed to a man not of her choosing as compensation for the gambling debts incurred by her brother, Emma was willing to bury her yearning for adventure and her belief in true love and happily ever after to become the dutiful wife of her betrothed. However, that single glimpse of Ben changes everything and Emma finds herself pursuing him with a newfound enthusiasm and fervor that makes a mockery of everything she is supposed to do.
Emma’s spirit for adventure and zest for everything to do with Ben, even when he tries (and fails spectacularly) to dissuade her, is the reason that Emma finally manages to pierce through the armor that Ben protects his heart and soul with. Ben believes that he is undeserving of a woman like Emma, even when he knows that her betrothed would destroy Emma’s spirit and heart if he were ever to truly claim her.
I must admit that for the very first time in a novel by Ms. Stuart, I was more enamored by the love that blooms between the secondary characters in the story, Molly O’Hanlon, better known as Red Molly who looks after the young ones at Beggars’ Ken and Thomas Alexander Campion, the man who pursues her, who wears her down bit by bit, and brings down the walls that she puts up with renewed strength every single day. Her back story was fascinating, and it was truly heartwarming when she found love in its truest form when she has always believed that she was of the undeserving.
I found that throughout the story, I was in a state of anticipation for that special something to happen between Emma and Ben which would give the novel the Anne Stuart factor, but alas. Nevertheless, because Ms. Stuart is such a stellar weaver of magical tales of love where one would least expects to find it, I enjoyed this little number and will continue to look forward to her announced publications in the future.
Recommended for fans of Anne Stuart and those who love romances in historical settings.
Final Verdict: It takes a thief like Emma’s undaunted spirit to win over the hardened heart and cynical soul of such as Ben’s. Ms. Stuart always delivers a rousing tale!

The autumn sun was setting low, turning the chilly air even colder, when suddenly Campion took her arm and drew her into the shadows. She didn’t resist. “Listen to me,” he said in a low, vibrant voice. “I can’t keep doing this to you. I’m driving you mad and I know it, and I’ve refused to listen to what you’ve told me over and over again. But I’ll listen now. You don’t want me; you don’t want anything to do with me. So be it. We’ll find Skittle, bring him back to the ken, and then I’ll leave you alone from now on.” “Will you?” she said, her voice tremulous, and his eyes narrowed in the twilight. Before she realized what he was doing, he’d lifted his hands to cup her face, and his eyes were searching, questioning, as his thumbs stroked her cheeks. “Molly?” he whispered. “Why are you crying?” She couldn’t be. She’d shed all her tears for a lifetime, and she wasn’t ever going to cry over some damned man… Whom she loved. “I don’t want you to leave me alone,” she said in a hoarse voice. “Then tell me what you want from me. Because I have no earthly idea what it is.” He was right, she was crying—she could feel the wetness on her cheeks, the sting of the cold wind against them. “Love,” she said. “I want your love.”
Format: E-Book Read with: Kindle Paperwhite Length: Novel Genre: Contemporary Romance POV: Third Person, Single Series: Sins, #1 Publisher: Harlequin Hero: Ben Havelock Heroine: Nerissa Havelock Sensuality: 🔥🔥 Published On: January 01, 1995 Started On: September 07, 2022 Finished On: September 08, 2022
His face was taut, his eyes hard. ‘Do I have to remind you that it was me you married, not him?’ ‘I want a divorce, Ben!’ Nerissa broke out in a voice that shook, and the room filled with an intolerable tension. ‘I’ll fight it,’ he said curtly. ‘I’ll use any weapon I have to -even if it means bringing him into it. What do you think that will do to your family pride?’
Secret Obsession by Charlotte Lamb, first published in January of 1995, is an unusual story at best, the reason why I picked this up to read in the first place. Told in the third person from the heroine’s perspective, Ms. Lamb brings to readers the story of Ben Havelock and his wife Nerissa who have been married for just three months when the story begins.
Ben and Nerissa’s had been a whirlwind romance, where Ben had pursued her in earnest since meeting her a year earlier at a party given by one of his clients, who happened to work with her. Ben being a very successful and wealthy barrister and a divorcee at that, had convinced Nerissa that they would work after managing to draw out all truths about about Nerissa and leaving her pretty much in the dark when it comes to understanding who Ben is inside out during their courtship.
Things come to a head when Nerissa receives the news that her adored cousin Philip is in a coma, Philip whom Bend would never agree to let her go to be by his side. For Ben knows the truth of Nerissa’s feelings for Philip and the reality behind the family unit within which Nerissa had grown up which makes for interesting reading.
Nerissa flies the coop (of course), to be with the man who had been the most important person in the world to her up till the point where the truth had been forced out leaving both of them devastated in the process. Nerissa is a woman torn about how she feels about her husband Ben; she wants him, thinks about him when he is not around, he is necessary for her, but she does not know him as she does Philip, and therein lies the problem.
When Ben comes in hot pursuit of her and forces her to face the ugly truths about her past (which is also very much present) which she has been playing ostrich about, it is up to Nerissa to decide whether she wants to fight for her marriage and the man who has become the most important person in her life unbeknownst to her, the man that she had actually fallen for without realizing the hows and whys.
As mentioned earlier in the review, Secret Obsession is not your usual run of the mill variety of story, the most shocking revelations being about Nerissa’s past and how that had shaped her up as the person she is at present. Nerissa meets Ben at a turning point in her life, when she had been desolate about the futility of the future she had envisaged of a love that was impossible.
For Ben, trust is a hard commodity to find, having held up the short end of the stick in his previous marriage. Some would say that Ben is a glutton for punishment given how he who swore off marriage altogether, and then goes onto tie the knot with Nerissa, a woman who was definitely going to cause him a lot of heartache and pain along the way.
I loved how Ben forces Nerissa into examining the depth of her own feelings when it comes to a whole host of issues that are revealed along the way and his patience with her. Most men would not have found it possible to be that patient, knowing that your wife’s heart belonged to someone else, the wife that you fell for a long way back.
While the story had a lot going for it, I found the execution of some of the aspects to be a bit problematic. There were elements of the story that definitely held my attention, like how obsessed Ben actually is about his wife, even when he had sworn off of marriage altogether when his first marriage failed so spectacularly.
I was also intrigued by Nerissa’s feelings – seldom do novels explore the nuances of the female emotions as it does Nerissa’s in this story. The raw emotions and the psychology explored in the story was riveting but the continued rehashing of how wounded Ben’s pride was and how his ex-wife had done a number on him made the story a tad tiresome. Skipping chunks on inner monologues in the story made it all worthwhile!
Recommended for fans of Charlotte Lamb and her unusual stories. I am guessing, given the ratings for most of her books, she is either a hit or miss for readers!
Final Verdict: Secret Obsession is a fitting title for a story that explores a husband’s hidden infatuation with his wife, whom he pursues and wins over through the biggest gamble of his life!

When she heard him come downstairs again she went out into the hall in a hurry. He was carrying his suitcase and she felt a pang of dismay as she realised he had meant it; he was really going. ‘Ben, listen… I can’t come now. How can I when they need me? But…’ she began, and he turned a grim face to her. ‘No buts, Nerissa. I meant what I said. I’m sick of this charade of a marriage. I can’t live with it any more.’ He was gone a moment later, the front door slamming behind him, and she stood rooted to the spot, white-faced and stunned. She heard the car start, the engine roar as he put his foot down on the accelerator, the sound of the wheels churning gravel as he set off along the drive. Ben had left her.

“People are such assholes behind their computers.”
The Doctor by E. L. Todd is the debut story in the four book series, Doctor. First published in April of 2019, The Doctor brings to readers the story of 30 year old Finn Burke and 26 year old Pepper, the latter being six months divorced from Finn’s younger brother, and Finn himself having left the military in which he had served for the past decade as a trauma physician.
Fate definitely seems to have crossed over its wires when it comes to Finn and Pepper, even when their fascination with each other, and the way they gravitate towards one another tells a story of its own. Even though Pepper’s marriage had ended with Colton after five years of being together, when Colton had come out as gay, they continue to live in close proximity to each other, and in each other’s lives, because for some reason, both Colton and Pepper believe that a divorce does not negate what they are to each other or have been to each other for a good part of both their lives.
Pepper who has a thriving lingerie business that she is proud of, helping women find the right fit and overcoming their self esteem issues through the beautiful pieces she selects and sells, finds herself in a bind when Colton’s coming out and the subsequent divorce does e a number on her own self esteem.
Even with Pepper making the moves pick up the pieces of her life and meets someone to some effect, Finn’s arrival changes all that. While Finn tries to regain his footing in civilian life, there is no turning the tide when it comes to the tightly wound string that pulls him towards Pepper, one destructive step at a time.
Being a four book series, this one of course just sets the groundwork for the rest of the books to follow. I found the story to be quite repetitive in most places, perhaps that is how the author manages to drag the story on for four books, to milk this story for whatever it is worth. Sometimes the story reads like a gay rights pamphlet which I particularly did not like, rejoicing in how open and progressive a person’s thinking is judged to be, all because they take things in stride when they find out someone close to them is gay.
I did not care much for Pepper’s ex husband Colton either, who seemed to hold onto Pepper and takes advantage of her presence to keep the truth at bay from the “lesser” progressives. Ultimately, the truth is, Colton and Pepper’s relationship post-divorce, seems like a recipe for disaster, which certainly did not win any points for me. While I understood in some aspects, the whole set-up was just too weird in my opinion.
I believe that the novel should have just focused on Finn and Pepper’s story, the forbidden nature of the feelings that blossoms to life between them, the heartache and the angst that they go through, and the ultimate happily ever after (I am assuming there is one at the end of the long draggy tunnel of four books), rather than focus on a bunch of secondary characters that I did not have any interest in. In my view, they did not really add any value to the story as it unfolded and just wasted the reader’s time from getting to the good bits.
I don’t think I will continue to read this series. It has been a year since I read this, and I am yet to muster up enough interest to hunt down the rest of the books in the series. If the first book is indicative of the amount of skimming I would have to do to just focus on Finn and Pepper’s story, I would rather not waste my time.
Recommended for fans of E. L. Todd, and those who love book series featuring the longer road to the happily ever after.
Final Verdict: The Doctor had interesting elements going for it, which ultimately did not end up being enough to make me stick to the series!

“Am I the only one who feels something here?” It was a bold thing to say, to blurt that out right to his face. But I felt comfortable with him, like I could say anything at all with no repercussions. I’d just asked my former brother-in-law if he felt the chemistry between us, and if he said no, it would be humiliating. But if he said yes, that might be even worse. He set his beer down without watching his movements. Then he slowly shifted on the couch closer to me, his eyes unblinking throughout the entire exchange. He stopped right beside me, and the only time he pulled his eyes away from mine was when he glanced down to look at my lips. I stopped breathing.
His fingers dug into my hair and pinned it back from my cheeks, just so he could get a better look at me. He hadn’t even kissed me yet, and it was the best I’d ever had. He directed my head against his and rested his forehead against mine. He was dead silent, his warm breaths falling over my cheek. Pine needles were even more fragrant in my nose. It was the closest I’d ever been to him. I hadn’t even hugged him before. Now I was cradled against him like he owned me.

The Guarded Heart by Robyn Donald is certainly a fitting title for a book that features a widowed hero who is determined that he would exact his revenge by forcing the woman responsible for the untimely death of his wife and unborn child into a marriage with him.
Only in her wildest dreams or nightmares rather, would 19 year old Alannah Finderne have ever thought that she would end up tying the knot with Nicholas Challoner, the man whose mere gaze chills her to her very core. But forced into a marriage with him because of the circumstances, Alannah nevertheless has a stark choice before her; make herself miserable by denying what Nicholas invokes in her, or surrender.
Both Alannah and Nicholas are intensely proud characters, stubborn to a fault, and as a result drives each other crazy – mostly not in a good way. But I found the story as it developed to be an interesting one nevertheless, realistic too if you ask me. How would I react if I were forced to marry a man, the demise of the love of whose life I was responsible for? Not to mention the age gap, the fact that the man loathes my very existence and marries me just so that he could have children with me, and making suffer would be an added bonus while at it? I guess I too would come out with my guns blazing, if I were not a heroine of the doormat variety.
The Guarded Heart is the first novel that I can recall, where the hero actually slaps the heroine – usually it is the other way around because the hero is being an ass; and I guess if we apply the same principles here, the heroine was also being rather cruel at that point. Makes me question as to why I accept it at face value when the heroine slaps the hero but I have a tough time reconciling with the fact when the heroine is on the receiving end. Goes to show that we all carry our prejudices that spills over every now and then.
Nicholas proves to be an interesting character, whose emotions we have to gauge through the observations that the heroine makes along the way. I would have liked it a bit better if I saw a bit more of those tightly guarded emotions from Nicholas that would have made the story more heartwarming when all was said and done.
Given that this story was first published when I was just over a year old, reading this almost 38 years later did not detract from the enjoyment factor – I am after all a masochist in my reading preferences; the more pain a story makes me go through, the better I like it.
Recommended for fans of old Harlequin romances and fans of Robyn Donald.
Final Verdict: The Guarded Heart often makes you want to just shake the main protagonists, but underneath all that stubbornness lies hearts that are brimming with love, the unfolding of which I enjoyed!

Shivers racked her. Blindly, sensually, she ran her hands from his waist to his shoulders, felt with bitter delight the sudden tensing of his muscles and explored further, the tips of her fingers delicately stroking the muscles on his arms, the smooth heated skin across his back. He groaned her name, his mouth hot against the turgid peak of her breast, and she sighed raggedly and began to move beneath him, undulating in a way that instinct told her would further inflame him.
His hands slid to her hips; when they paused she opened tortured eyes and saw reflected in his face the agony and need that had her in its grip. And with the first hard thrust of his body the world exploded, sensation piled on sensation so that beneath her eyelids there was a sunburst of colour and she was falling, falling into its vortex, sobbing, gasping, her body racked by an ecstasy so far beyond her hidden fantasies that she thought she might die.
Very slowly she reached out a finger and touched the jewel, then pushed it to one side as she got up from the bed. When Andrew was tucked in beneath the mosquito netting she came back, and picked the beautiful thing up. Nicholas watched her through heavy-lidded eyes, his mouth compressed and grim. ‘Put it on me,’ she said huskily, and turned her back to him, brushing her curls forward to leave the vulnerable nape of her neck bare. His fingers barely touched her skin, but she shivered as she faced him. ‘How does it look?’ she asked. Anger glittered in his glance and there was a pallor around his mouth that warned her she was pushing him very close to the edge. He didn’t so much as glance at the necklace; from beneath a frown his gaze was fixed on her as though he would like to hurt her. She knew a moment’s fear before he said slowly, thickly, ‘Like you. Beautiful, making no concessions, setting its own standards.’
‘Tell me you love me,’ he demanded, moving so that he loomed over her, his lips only a fraction away from hers. ‘I love you—I love you with everything I am. Nick—please—’ ‘And that you want me.’ He was merciless, his expression so ferociously controlled that for a moment she was afraid. ‘You know—’ ‘Tell me!’ ‘Oh, God, I want you.’ Tears glazed her eyes. She was hypnotised by her own sensuality. Twisting, writhing beneath him, she slid her hands to his hips, pulling him down to her. ‘I love you so much I could die for you,’ she groaned.
Format: E-Book Read with: Kindle Paperwhite Length: Novel Genre: Romantic Comedy Series: Writer Friends, #4 Publisher: Avon Hero: Zachary James Zemaitis Heroine: Adele Harris Sensuality: 3 Date of Publication: May 27, 2008 Started On: August 20, 2021 Finished On: August 21, 2021
Not Another Bad Date by Rachel Gibson is a second-chance themed romance set in Texas. 25 year old Adele Harris believes herself to be cursed when it comes to love, and with good reason; she has not had a good date or decent sex in years. Having been in love twice in her life, the last time being three years back, it is however her first love that she still recalls with clarity because of the intensity that it had been.
14 years since they briefly dated, Adele once again comes across Zachary James Zemaitis, the man who broke her heart all those years ago. Widowed and a single father now, Zach coaches high-school ball and is determined that he would do right when it comes to his daughter Tiffany, as his career as an NFL quarterback had meant missing out on a lot for the first ten years of her life.
When circumstances force Adele to move back to Cedar Creek for a couple of months, she is more than shocked to find out of the untimely demise of Zach’s wife, for whom Zach had walked away from Adele all those years ago. Once bitten, twice as shy, Adele is determined that she would keep Zach at arm’s distance, but then again, the lazy charm that Zach had won her over with back then, not to mention the blistering sexual heat that is between them which seems to be more pronounced than even before, is a tough mix to walk away from.
Not Another Bad Date is a story that while I enjoyed, I believe could have been better. Perhaps it is because the story did not turn out as I exactly thought it would be, with the ghost of Zach’s wife being the catalyst that kick-starts the current chain of events, that particularly did not work for me. I believe Zach and Adele would have gotten there even without the dead wife being part of the picture. While Zach has his own baggage from how he was forced to get married, the disillusionment that had caught up with him a couple of years later; all that and more makes Zach reluctant to start something that could lead to a permanent situation.
Enjoyable in its way, Not Another Bad Date is recommended for fans of Rachel Gibson and for those who love second-chance romances!
Final Verdict: When fate intervenes, resistance is futile – that is what Zachary and Adele finds out as these two find their way back to each other!

As if she hadn’t spoken, he pushed her hair to one side. “Would you drive me insane like you used to?” He lowered his face, and his breath warmed the side of her neck. “And honey, you drove me out of my mind.” He slid one big hand around her side to her flat stomach and pulled her back against his hard chest. “I was the first man to make love to you. I haven’t forgotten that.” “It was a long time ago.” “You haven’t forgotten, either.” His lips brushed her heated skin, and those hot little tingles she’d worried about spread warmth all over her body.
“I need you.” “No. You want me.” “Same thing.” “No. Oxygen is something you need.” Her back hit the wall next to the last bathroom stall. “Just be still,” he said, and placed his hands on her shoulders. “And stop running from me.” “Stop coming after me.” He shook his head as his brown gaze stared into hers. “I’m beginning to think I need you like I need oxygen.”
“I think you’re going to like this.” She straddled his hips, positioned herself, then slowly sat. He was big and extremely hard, and she took her time, feeling every bulge and ridge through the thin latex until the head of his penis bumped her cervix. His breath hissed from his lungs as his hands slid up her thighs and hips to her waist. “You look good up there. I like it already.” “It gets better.” Slowly she raised herself, rocking her hips and sliding back down. She teased him with her body, clenching her muscles around him, drawing his flesh deeper, using him to build and stroke the sexual fire burning through her. “You’ve learned a few things,” he said, his grip on her waist tightening. She rolled and rotated her hips, feeding his need and hers, and looked into his drugged eyes as he watched her. She bent forward to kiss the side of his neck. Her breasts pressed into his chest, and she whispered into his ear, “You feel good. Hard. Huge.” He rolled with them until she was on her back looking up into his face. His fingers curled with hers, and his mouth came down hard.
She rolled the condom down his shaft and pushed his shoulders until he sat submerged in bubbles halfway up the defined muscles of his chest. She straddled his hips, placed her palms on the sides of his face, and kissed him. The tips of her breasts brushed his warm skin, and she ran her fingers through his hair. She kissed his neck and his throat, and her hands ran all over him, touching as much of him as she could reach. It wasn’t just sex now. There was more involved than just body parts, and when she took him deep into her body, her hands returned to the sides of his face and she stared into his eyes. His labored breath brushed her cheek as she moved and rocked her hips. “Zach,” she whispered, her voice heavy with desire and emotion. Within minutes an orgasm rushed across her skin and gripped her heart. Her vaginal walls tightened around him, and his fingers dug into her behind. As he came into her body, she kissed his mouth, filling the kiss with the new and conflicted feelings she felt in her heart.
