Plunging into my first Susie Tate book turned out to be the best thing ever! Susie Tate’s Daydreamer is the kind of book that takes on a familiar trope, childhood friends turned into boss-subordinate relationship, and breathes into it a heartfelt, addictive energy.

From the very first page, the story pulled me into Lucy Mayweather’s messy, colourful world as she tries to navigate the cut-throat environment of Felix Moretti’s high-powered London office. What starts off as a desperate attempt by Lucy to find her footing outside her small village life, while hopelessly nursing a crush she has carried for years, unfolds into a romance that is both intense and painfully emotional.

Lucy is a heroine I could not help but bring out my pompoms for. She is the bookworm in all of us; whimsical, shy, forever daydreaming, and clearly out of place in Felix’s ruthless corporate jungle. She wears her battered jumpers and carries pens in her hair, and yet beneath all that awkwardness is a creative, brilliant author with stories that have the power to captivate. Her struggles with loneliness and vulnerability make her deeply relatable, but what stood out for me most was her quiet form of strength, how she still carries that spark despite the constant dismissals and the cruelty she faces from those around her.

Felix, by contrast, is all sharp edges and control. At thirty-three, he is a successful, commitment-phobic billionaire with a reputation as a playboy. He is emotionally scarred by his father’s cruelty, and that pain drives much of his cynicism and obsession with success. To Lucy, though, he is also the boy who once listened to her stories, the one who never made her feel odd for dreaming.

Watching him battle with his possessiveness, his jealousy, and ultimately his own vulnerability, made him both infuriating and enticing on so many levels. There were times I wanted to shake him for being so blind and emotionally stunted, but that only made his groveling later all the more satisfying.

The central conflict between them hits hard; Felix’s inability to trust, his constant prioritization of work and control, and Lucy’s hidden truths. There were moments where I questioned what Felix even wanted from her, moments where his actions nearly broke her beyond repair. But what followed was a redemption arc packed with raw emotion, grand gestures, and groveling that truly delivered. The tension between them, from their first kiss to their explosive confrontations, kept me on edge, and the eventual conclusion was absolutely worth it.

What I loved most about the story was how much it felt like an extended, modern Lynne Graham novel; rich with angst, a ruthless hero, and a heroine who transforms from a pushover into a stronger version of herself. The writing had me smiling at Lucy’s quirks one moment, clutching my chest at Felix’s harshness the next, and then sighing happily at the tenderness buried beneath all that ruthlessness. The epilogue, with its warm glimpse into their happily-ever-after, tied it all together in the most heart-melting way.

Recommended for: readers who love brother’s best friend romances, ruthless billionaire heroes, groveling done to a fine art, and quirky heroines who surprise you with their strength.

Final Verdict: A wonderful, emotional romance that had me hooked from the start. With top-notch groveling and a beautiful end, Daydreamer is a gem.

Raya Morris Edwards is a new-to-me author. I honestly cannot recall how I stumbled across this number, perhaps it was during one of my never-ending quests to find romances of the darker variety featuring morally grey heroes, which, I’m happy to admit, has become an obsession of mine. My first sampling of Ms. Edwards’ work turned out to be swell in every sense, delivering exactly the kind of brooding, dangerous, and magnetic anti-hero I love to lose myself in.

Set against the stark, snow-swept backdrop of northern Montana, Sovereign is a dark, atmospheric romance that blends obsession, danger, and undeniable passion. At its heart is Keira Stowe, a woman trapped in an abusive marriage and groomed into giving up her family ranch. When tragedy strikes and she finds herself widowed, unprotected, and cornered by her late husband’s ruthless family, her path collides with that of Gerard Sovereign, a man both feared and respected across the land he rules like a king.

Gerard Sovereign is a rancher, very much a morally grey figure. Scarred by his own past and fighting his demons as a recovered addict, Gerard’s world is defined by control, vengeance, and ruthless fairness. But for Keira, he shows a side no one else sees. Obsessed with her from the moment they meet (this happens while she is married), Gerard offers her protection, retribution, and safety, but at the price of total submission. Their relationship soon evolves into one of raw Dom-Sub intensity, full of unique dynamics and emotional vulnerability that makes this story stand out from more formulaic takes on BDSM romance.

Keira, in contrast, is weary yet resilient. For the first time in her life, she finds herself desired, protected, and given the freedom to express who she is. While Gerard demands obedience, he also respects her strength and pushes her to confront her past scars. Their bond is not without doubts; Keira herself is plagued by suspicions that Gerard may have had a hand in her husband’s death, yet she cannot resist the pull of a man who sees her as his equal partner, not just another pawn.

This is a romance carved from the shadows: Gerard’s simmering revenge against Keira’s husband’s family becomes the backdrop of their union, while their growing relationship is tested by power imbalances, secrets, and the ever-present dangers of the Sovereign Mountain. And yet, amidst the vengeance and moral greys, there are moments of tenderness; the way Gerard cares for Keira during her most vulnerable moments, or how his kisses are like fine art (I swear that is how I felt when I was reading them), that softens the edges of his otherwise relentless dominance.

What I loved most was the unapologetic portrayal of Gerard as a true anti-hero, one whose only softness comes for his heroine. I also appreciated the depth given to Keira, who, unlike many submissives in dark romances, pushes back and challenges her Dom. However, the one aspect I would have liked to see more of was her finding an identity outside of being Sovereign’s woman, given how little choice she has had in her life. Still, it is clear that for Keira, being his sub, his partner, his wife, and the mother of his future children is what she wants most of all.

Recommended for: readers who crave dark, emotionally intense romances with morally grey heroes, BDSM dynamics, and heroines who find empowerment even in submission.

Final Verdict: A brooding, darkly sensual cowboy romance where obsession meets devotion, Sovereign burns with intensity and leaves its mark long after the last page.

Tiger’s Eye by Karen Robards, one of my go-to-authors for romance is one of those sweeping historical romances that takes a forbidden premise and pushes it to its emotional edge. The story begins with Lady Isabella Georgiana Albans St. Just, a young aristocrat whose seemingly gilded life masks a marriage filled with constraints and unhappiness. Her world collides quite literally with Alec Tyron, the notorious overlord of London’s underworld, when he rescues her from danger. It is a meeting that sparks both fear and fascination, drawing together two people who should never have crossed paths.

Kidnapped by a band of thugs intent on using her for their gain, Isabella finds herself in desperate straits until Alec intervenes. His reputation alone is enough to cow her captors, but it is his decisive, brutal action that frees her. In the aftermath, Alec decides not to let her slip away, for his own reasons both practical as well as personal, and what begins as a rescue quickly becomes a forced proximity neither of them can walk away from. For Isabella, the man who terrifies the city becomes both her savior and her undoing.

Alec is as morally grey as a hero can get. Hardened by his rise from the streets to the throne of the city’s criminal underbelly, he is ruthless, commanding, and dangerously magnetic. Yet beneath that hard exterior is a man capable of fierce loyalty and unexpected tenderness, qualities that reveal themselves in the way he treats Isabella. In contrast, Isabella is everything Alec is not; refined, privileged, and naive at first glance. But as their journey unfolds, her strength emerges, and she becomes a heroine willing to risk her reputation, her safety, and her heart for the one man society says she cannot have.

Theirs is a union that, under most circumstances, could never have worked. Their differences are insurmountable on paper, and more than once I found myself holding my breath as I read, even all the while knowing that this was a romance with a happily-ever-after ending, and yet still questioning how on earth Robards would take them to that conclusion. That tension, the constant awareness that love for these two was both dangerous and inevitable, is what made the book so compelling.

What struck me most was how realistically Robards handled Isabella’s situation. Many romances of this era shy away from adultery or paint heroines as paragons of virtue who resist temptation until circumstances align. Tiger’s Eye takes a bolder approach: Isabella succumbs to what her heart and body crave, and in doing so, her choices feel both human and honest, especially for a woman stuck in a marriage that can only be described as torturous. It will undoubtedly divide readers, but for me, it added a layer of depth and realism that made her plight all the more moving.

On the other hand, the lack of an epilogue left me feeling shortchanged. After everything Alec and Isabella endure, I longed for a glimpse of them in a hard-won happily ever after, secure and free from the shadows that dogged them. I will just tell myself that it is publishing constraints at the time that demanded that an epilogue be left out, what I feel is a crucial missing piece in an otherwise powerful story.

Recommended for: readers who enjoy historical romances with morally grey heroes, intense forbidden passion, and the not your average heroines who shake up everything!

Final Verdict: Tiger’s Eye is a scorching, emotional tale of love that dares to defy class, morality, and society itself; Alec and Isabella’s story is as breathtaking as it is impossible, and I reveled in every minute of it.

Lynne Graham’s Rafaello’s Mistress is a classic Harlequin romance brimming with passion, angst, and the kind of emotional intensity that makes Ms. Grahams’s books so addictive. Rafaello is the kind of hero Graham excels at creating; commanding, arrogant, and emotionally complex. As such, it is not far fetched for their shared history to have resulted in misunderstandings and half-truths, and much of the conflict later on is fueled by the mistakes and manipulations of those around them. Rafaello’s belief in Glory’s supposed betrayal colors every interaction, creating sparks of both fury and passion.

What makes this story so compelling is not just the clash of wills, but the revelation of family secrets and the complex web of ties that bind them together. The more the truth unravels, the more layered Rafaello becomes as a character, moving beyond the archetypal alpha into something deeper.

I loved the humor woven into this story; it lightened the heavy emotions and gave both Rafaello and Glory moments of unexpected warmth. The sexual tension between them is electric, with explosive kisses and encounters that keep the pages flying. What stood out most was how nuanced his characterization turned out to be. Instead of a one-dimensional domineering hero, Ms. Graham delivers a man whose contradictions and vulnerabilities make him all the more magnetic.

Told entirely from Glory’s perspective, the book gives the heroine’s voice center stage, and I found that choice made the story even more powerful. Seeing Rafaello only through her eyes adds to the mystery of his emotions, making his actions all the more intense when his true feelings come through.

Recommended for: readers who love angsty, passionate romances with complex heroes, strong but vulnerable heroines, and a shared past that demands resolution.

The buildup is exquisite, layered with intensity, and leaves reader craving more. At times, Ian’s tendency to shove Molly away for her own good did get repetitive, but it also highlighted his deep sense of sacrifice and fear of losing control. Molly’s steadfastness provided the perfect counterweight, grounding the story in warmth and hope.

Revisiting this book after so many years reminded me why the Primal Instinct series had left such a strong impression on me when I first began reviewing and blogging. The blend of tortured hero, paranormal suspense, and blistering romance makes it a heady, immersive read. Ian is simply unforgettable—sexy, wounded, and magnetic in a way that keeps you turning pages—and Molly proves to be the only woman strong enough to match him.

Recommended for: readers who love tortured heroes, paranormal romances with dark undertones, and heroines who stand strong against impossible odds.

Leo Demetrios is every inch the larger-than-life hero, a Greek billionaire with the commanding presence that Graham’s readers like myself expect. Beneath that ruthlessness lies a man who finds himself completely undone by Angie Brown, a heroine who has quietly lived in his world’s periphery as the butler’s daughter.

Angie is far younger than Leo, just nineteen when their paths first intertwine, and the years and circumstances between them only serve to heighten the storm brewing when they come together again. As a single mother, Angie has built a life for herself, but her lingering vulnerability and the secret she carries makes her relationship with Leo combustible from the very start.

The story brims with conflicts born out of pride, jealousy, and half-truths. Leo’s cousin Drew plays a pivotal role in fanning those flames, his own feelings for Angie creating rifts that push Leo into all the wrong conclusions. Watching Leo wrestle with his possessiveness and helpless jealousy, so convinced she loves another, makes for high-octane angst, the kind that only Graham seems to deliver so well. Dialogue dominates the novel, and it works in untangling the mess of misunderstandings that pile up between Leo and Angie.

A departure from the classic Garaham style, especially for a story published in the 90’s, what stood out to me is how talk-heavy the book was. While it gave space to develop the tangled family dynamics, it did feel at times like it robbed readers of the kind of exquisite passion that the tension between the main couple so richly promised. That said, when Graham does deliver, the connection between Leo and Angie is scorching and deeply emotional. Leo is magnificent in his intensity, and Angie, despite her youth and moments of insecurity, proves to be his equal in every sense, meeting his fire with her own strength.

For me, this story captured everything I love about Lynne Graham’s older romances: the larger-than-life hero, the vulnerable heroine who has an inner backbone of steel, the messy entanglements of pride and love, and the undeniable heat between them.

Recommended for: Fans of Lynne Graham’s vintage style who enjoy jealousy-fueled angst, powerful alpha heroes, and heroines who give as good as they get.

Final Verdict: An angst-filled romance brimming with family drama and fiery passion, The Winter Bride delivers the kind of emotional ride that reminds me why Lynne Graham remains a timeless favorite in the genre.

Having enjoyed Return to Monte Carlo by Cate C. Wells, I was psyched to dive into her backlist of published works, which seems to be aplenty. Given her penchant for writing heroes who are more tightly coiled than the average, where the ultimate payoff of patience delivers in spades, I was excited to pick up the Five Packs series and give it a whirl.

Ms. Wells opens her Five Packs series with a story that blends raw wolf-pack politics with a romance steeped in stubborn pride and vulnerability that neither of the main protagonists would admit to. The Tyrant Alpha’s Rejected Mate follows Una Hayes, a scarred and overlooked wolf in the Pack, and Killian Kelly, the feared alpha whose authority shapes every corner of the Pack. What begins as a humiliating rejection of Una as Killian’s mate, spirals into a push and pull of power, pain, and a reluctant bond that refuses to be denied, rooted in a past that neither can recall.

Una is a heroine hardened by circumstance. Lame and never having shifted, she has grown accustomed to life on the fringes of the Pack where women rank low and her scars set her apart even further. Resourceful, independent, and fiercely protective of the life she has built with her roommates, she hides her wounds behind defiance. At times, that defiance reads as pride too sharp-edged to soften, making her both admirable and frustrating in equal doses.

Killian, at twenty-nine, is the archetype of a ruthless alpha: feared, respected, and utterly convinced of his strength and infallibility. Having never laid with a woman (by choice), Killian has poured everything into maintaining power and control, never allowing emotion to crack through his hard exterior. As such, when faced with Una’s claim, his rejection is swift, brutal, and absolute. But once the dust settles, his wolf refuses to let her go, forcing him to reckon with the scars they both carry—visible and invisible.

When Killian ultimately starts his pursuit to claim his mate, Una refuses to be dragged into submission, and he refuses to admit weakness—even when it is clear that rejecting her might have been the gravest mistake of his life. Their clashes are fierce, often more about dominance than tenderness, but beneath it all are glimpses of vulnerability that makes their bond feel inevitable. The moments when their wolves slip past all the stubbornness and find connection are some of the most charming in the book.

I had mixed feelings about Una as a heroine. While I understood the reasons for her hardness; living as an outcast in a backward pack having shaped her that way, her rigidity at times grated on me. I wanted to see more give, more willingness to compromise beyond the pride she clung to.

Killian, on the other hand, was a fascinating study in alpha contradictions, his strength matched by his surprising inexperience in intimacy. Watching him learn to see Una not as a challenge to overcome but as a mate to cherish was the ending that made the journey worth it.

Recommended for: readers who love fated mates, pack dynamics, and shifter romance with heat.

Final Verdict: Cate C. Wells delivers a primal, stubborn, slow-burn paranormal romance where pride and fates collide that is equal parts raw and tender.

Replacement, the second installment in the Worthings series by Claire Kent, is a novel that can be read as a standalone. Featuring themes such as identity swap and an arrangement of convenience, Replacement is a novel that has a lot going for it.

The story begins when 27 year old Jade Delacourte agrees to the unthinkable; to switch places with her identical twin. The story is taut, emotional, and sensual, with sex scenes that are not just hot but impactful, layered with the vulnerability and hunger that defines their relationship. By the end, William emerges as a memorable hero, and Jade cements herself as the heroine who was always meant for him, even if it took deception to bring them together. Arthur’s book, teased at the edges here, feels like it will be equally compelling.

I never imagined that Nero could have a gentle touch. I’ve seen him get in more fights than I can count. He’s like a walking weapon—violent, unpredictable, wreaking destruction on whatever he touches.

Savage Lover, branded as a dark mafia romance, is exactly what its title suggests; fast-paced, dangerous, reckless, and charged with an intensity that rarely lets up. It pairs Camille Rivera, a mechanic shouldering more responsibility than anyone her age should bear, with Nero Gallo, the wild card of the Gallo family whose reputation for chaos precedes him everywhere he goes. What begins as an unlikely connection between two people who think they are too broken for love quickly escalates into a high-octane ride filled with fire, risk, and unexpected tenderness.

Camille is the heart of this story. She is grounded, utterly devoted to her family, and continually struggling to keep up with the expenses. With her father gravely ill and her younger brother constantly on the edge of disaster, she is left holding together a crumbling household and a failing business. She is used to being dismissed and underestimated; made a mockery of by the elite in society, abandoned by her mother, and stuck in a cycle that does not leave much room for dreams.

Nero, on the other hand, is the quintessential dark antihero. He is the one people cross the street to avoid, the neighborhood “psychopath” who lives for adrenaline and destruction. At first glance, he is all chaos, speed, and recklessness; but the more we see of him through Camille’s eyes, the clearer it becomes that he is more than the mask he wears. Hollowed out by the emptiness of casual flings and meaningless thrills, Nero awaits something real to shake him awake. And Camille does just that.

While Camille is weighed down by responsibility and desperation, Nero is addicted to risk and danger. Their romance builds not through soft words but through high-stakes encounters, stolen moments, and the kind of chemistry that burns hot enough to scorch. It IS messy, passionate, and like Nero himself, wildly unpredictable.

Nero and Camille are a couple who should not make sense, and yet they do. Their connection is visceral, their banter sharp, and the way he sees her, really sees her, gave the romance its beating heart. While I loved the thrill and the highs as they came, I do not think I would be reading any of the other books in the series, unless something convinces me to take the plunge.

Still, this installment delivers exactly what it promises: a wild, dangerous, ride-or-die kind of love story. Nero may be reckless, but with Camille, he finds something worth holding onto, and that is what makes the chaos meaningful.

Recommended for: Readers who love dangerous antiheroes and high-octane plots.

Final Verdict: High-octane, gritty, and passionate, Savage Lover pairs chaos with heart in a ride-or-die romance that burns hot and fast.

With Sanctuary, the seventh book in the Kindled series, Claire Kent perhaps takes on the most challenging of tropes thus far in this series—writing about a female protagonist who has undergone unimaginable horror and trauma in her bid for survival in the new world order that emerges from the ashes of the asteroid that hit the Earth.

How does such a character find strength to go on? How do they move past the shame and guilt that must be a continuous loop in their minds? How do you put them in a situation where they are able to find love and experience physical intimacy that actually acts as a healing balm in the face of their nightmares? All this and more, Ms. Kent takes on as she writes about 25 year old Breanna, the elder sister that we come across in Citadel, the sixth book in the series.

Breanna as one can imagine, is a woman hardened by survival in a brutal world shaped by those that survived the aftermath of the Impact. Since then, for the first time, Breanna is no longer bound to protect her sister Del, who has found love, security, and a future with the man who loves her to distraction. For the first time in years, Breanna is free to make her own choices, to live for herself. But freedom in this new world does not come without danger, and her job as a courier pits her against another lone operative—Aidan—who threatens not only her livelihood but her careful emotional distance. What starts off as a clash of wills slowly reveals an intimacy neither of them expected.

Breanna is a fierce character. She has to be in order to survive the ordeals she has been put through. She is the woman who has endured every kind of pain, degradation, and dehumanization the world can dish out and emerged standing—if not whole, then unbroken. Her body was the currency she used to buy safety for herself and her younger sister, and though she has long since escaped that life, the shadows linger. She is determined to remain independent, never to depend on a man again, and never to relinquish the control she clawed back from a world that took so much from her. As a a result, I admired her strength, even when I couldn’t always feel her. Her trauma was heavy and deeply personal, and though I understood her, I failed to fully connect with her on an emotional level.

Aidan, by contrast, is a slow burn of a hero. Less overtly intense than others in the series, his strength is quieter, wrapped in dry wit and carefully concealed wounds. He is a widower, a father who lost everything, and a man who lives by his own moral code—even if that means taking on jobs others won’t. He is frustrating, charming, a bit cocky, and ultimately more tender than I anticipated, and what Breanna exactly needed. While I did not end up falling headlong for Aidan the way I did with Cole or Travis, I appreciated how well-matched he was to Breanna. A hero with too much intensity might have broken her spirit further, but Aidan—with his patience and understanding, gave her the space to heal on her own terms.

Their relationship is not a sweeping romance but a gradual, sometimes stumbling, reconciliation with their pasts and their own worth. The emotional intimacy builds slowly, cracking open Breanna’s defenses, allowing her to confront the shame and grief that she has buried for years. Ms. Kent writes trauma with unflinching clarity; never sensationalized and grounded in a way that makes it all too real. The conversations between Breanna and Aidan, especially about consent, submission, and power, are some of the most emotionally naked scenes in the book.

And yet, Sanctuary didn’t hit quite as hard as others in the series. While I respected Breanna’s journey and empathized with her pain, I found myself detached from most of the story. It was not just Breanna, it was Aidan as well. The pacing felt more muted, and the romantic connection, though believable, lacked the raw magnetism that defined Last Light or Citadel. It is not that the story lacked heart; it just did not punch me in the gut the way I had hoped.

That said, Ms. Kent remains unmatched in the world of romance writers. Her ability to create varied, distinctive characters across a shared world, each marked by different losses, hopes, and shades of resilience is what keeps me coming back. Sanctuary may not be my favorite in the series, but it is perhaps a necessary one.

Even though Sanctuary can be read as a standalone, I would advise reading Citadel first as they are loosely connected.

Recommended for: Readers who appreciate trauma-informed storytelling, fierce heroines who you can only admire, and romances built on earned trust with slow burn heroes!

Final Verdict: Sanctuary is a quiet, difficult, and necessary journey through trauma and healing. Breanna’s story deserved to be told—and more importantly, to be heard.
