Finally, he had worked it out. This was what he wanted. His chest pounded as he waited for the inevitable panic to set in. Why wasn’t he panicking? He turned his head slowly, almost reluctantly, to take another look at the sleeping face of his beloved.
Oh. That was why. He wasn’t infatuated. He was in love.
Alice Coldbreath has a remarkable knack for writing unconventional romances and I have loved most of them, and her most recent publication, A Much Maligned Miss immediately caught my attention. Caroline Halperston has spent her entire life being vilified by the very person who should have loved and protected her most—her own mother.
Branded a cruel and unfeeling daughter by her community due to relentless lies, Caroline has resigned herself to a lonely existence until one desperate decision sends her fleeing to London with the charming yet entirely unsuitable Earl of Atherton. What follows is an unusual road trip across Victorian England, an impromptu household tucked away above a gin palace, and a romance that slowly takes both its protagonists by surprise.
Caroline is not your typical historical romance heroine. At twenty-six, years of emotional neglect have left her cautious, deeply insecure, and unable to trust kindness when it is finally offered to her. Every decision she makes is shaped by a lifetime of manipulation and isolation, making her reluctance to believe in happiness entirely understandable.
Opposite her is twenty-nine year old Gervaise Langdon, a seemingly carefree aristocrat whose affable charm hides an unexpectedly dangerous streak beneath the surface. I thoroughly enjoyed discovering that there was far more to him than his easygoing exterior suggested. Watching this laidback nobleman gradually become fiercely protective of a woman he never intended to fall for was easily one of the highlights of the novel.
As the pair settle into their unconventional arrangement, Gervaise slowly realizes that what began as a casual act of generosity has completely altered the course of his life. Meanwhile, Caroline struggles to reconcile the growing affection she feels with the emotional scars that have taught her to distrust love itself. Their relationship becomes less about external obstacles and more about overcoming the invisible damage inflicted by years of cruelty, while old secrets continue to cast a dangerous shadow over Caroline’s future.
The strongest part of the novel was undoubtedly its opening. I loved the entire sequence of Caroline escaping her miserable home and accompanying Gervaise to London on what initially seemed like nothing more than a whim. Their journey together was wonderfully entertaining, and Gervaise’s growing bewilderment over his own changing feelings was genuinely delightful to watch. There was something incredibly endearing about this man, who had no intention of settling down, slowly realizing he had become completely undone by the very woman he had underestimated. His gentle courtship, his determination to protect her dignity, and his self-imposed vow not to truly claim her until she willingly accepted marriage all made him an immensely likable hero. His confusion, frustration, and gradual surrender to love were, for me, the emotional heart of the book.
Unfortunately, the novel never quite sustained that momentum. While I sympathized deeply with Caroline and understood that her resistance stemmed from genuine trauma rather than stubbornness, I often found it difficult to fully understand what she truly wanted. Her motivations occasionally felt frustratingly elusive, making it harder to emotionally connect with some of her decisions. The pacing also became uneven during the latter half of the novel, and despite the simmering attraction between the couple, the romance itself felt surprisingly restrained for much of the story.
Considering how much emotional and sexual tension had been built, I found myself expecting a far greater emotional aftermath than the novel ultimately delivered. By the final quarter, I could not shake the feeling that the premise and characters had all the ingredients for something deeply moving, yet the execution never quite reached those emotional heights. I am also not much of a fan of heroes who are “beta” in the bedroom, and perhaps that was also another reason that the story towards its conclusion, did not hit all the spots for me.
Recommended for: Readers who enjoy emotionally damaged heroines, protective heroes, unconventional domestic arrangements, and gentle slow-burn courtship.
Final Verdict: A Much Maligned Miss delivers a compelling premise and an utterly endearing hero who carried the story, but an uneven second half and restrained heroine and romance kept it from reaching its full emotional potential.

She held still at that, blinking in the dark. Wasn’t he the one who was supposed to take pity? What had she done wrong? she wondered, her thoughts scrambling. Had she been too greedy for him? “Very well,” she resolved. “You must touch me then, instead.” She tugged lightly on her hands, and he released them at once.
He took a deep breath as though fortifying himself for some ordeal and Caroline’s confidence wavered slightly. Did he not want to? The thought was a lowering one. Before she could grow too dismayed, she felt the back of his hand stroke gently over her cheek, down her neck, then lightly caress her collarbone.
Even this featherlight touch made her heart race. “You have been deprived, haven’t you?” he marveled, but he did not sound mocking this time. For some reason the words still stung, and Caroline shut her eyes tight. His hand slid back up to cup her cheek, preventing her from turning away. “Shhh,” he soothed her though she had not spoken a word. “Let me be good to you, Caroline. I want to be, if you will only let me.”
He had liked the challenging lift of her chin, the gleam in her eye as she waited for his reaction. He wanted it, that…her, all to himself. He wanted to set her at the center of his world and then organize his whole existence around her.
That alone was what would satisfy him.
Finally, Caroline tipped her head back to look at him. No doubt her eyes were puffy and red, but he gazed down into her face, showing no sign of disapproval. She plucked at one of the buttons on his shirt. “You know,” she said throatily. “If not for that vision, then I would never have climbed into your carriage the next morning, Gervaise.”
He was quiet for a moment. “Then, forgive my selfishness, my sweet,” he answered softly, “but in that case, I am glad you had it.”
It was lucky she had no room left in her blissed-out brain for shame. Gervaise cupped her face, and she pressed her cheek against his hand, waiting dreamily for him to say something. Something teasing perhaps to snap her out of her pleasurable daze.
Instead, when he spoke, his words sounded almost serious. “I’ve been so damned careful not to ruin you,” he said. “Yet you refuse to extend me the same courtesy.”
Caroline’s eyes flew open. “What do you mean?” She faltered. “How have I ruined you?”
“You have ruined me thoroughly and completely,” he said, his thumb drifting over her lips. He did not sound angry though. Caroline blinked down at him, but at that moment they heard a footfall on the stair, and both hurried to right themselves.
Once she had caught her breath and her thundering heartbeat had evened out, she reached up to pet his hair. “Oh, well done,” she murmured in assurance. “That was very well done.”
He pulled back his head to look at her, then gave a breathless laugh. “Just tell me that you love me,” he wheezed, collapsing onto his back beside her. “I’m begging you at this point.”
“Have I not said so already?” she asked in surprise.
“No. You have not, my stern preceptress.”
“But of course I do, Gervaise. I love you so very, very much.”
He heaved a satisfied sigh and insinuated his arm between her head and the pillow. “Finally,” he said.
