I am so glad that I gave into my curiosity when @pomeloreads on Instagram posted her review of The Heir. Sophia Travers was a new-to-me author, but Pomelo’s enthusiasm for this book was infectious enough to make me add this to my ever-growing TBR pile. A year on, the posts were making a turn again, with the second installment of the series out just recently. In desperate need of a good contemporary romance after a string of heavier reads, I finally picked this one up, with high expectations. Suffice it to say, I could not have made a better choice and all my expectations were met and exceeded. This was one of those books that steadily wrapped itself around my heart until I reached the final page wondering why I had waited so long to read it.

At its core, The Heir is an enemies-to-lovers romance built around a marriage of convenience between two families bound together by decades of resentment, betrayal, and old wounds. Emory Hunter has spent years believing the Prince family destroyed everything that once belonged to hers, while Aiden Prince represents the privileged old-money dynasty she has always despised. Their hastily drawn up marriage is nothing more than a calculated business arrangement, one that promises both of them something they desperately want.

Publicly, they are to play the role of the perfect couple, which somehow does not take off as smoothly as they envisaged. Privately, they wage a quiet battle of wills, convinced that giving in to the attraction that has always more or less existed between them, the pulse of which continues to grow exponentially stronger, would cost them far more than they are willing to lose. What begins as mutual hostility slowly transforms into something far more dangerous, as years of assumptions are stripped away and two people who have secretly been orbiting each other since high school finally begin to see one another clearly.

The changing dynamics between Aiden and Emory were, without question, my favourite part of the novel. The longing between them practically drips from every page, making every shared glance, every conversation, and every stolen moment feel deliciously tense. The fact that they had always noticed each other, even back in their school days, gave their relationship a foundation that made every interaction feel believable. Their chemistry never relied solely on physical attraction. It grew through curiosity, trust, vulnerability, and countless small moments that gradually chipped away at the walls both had carefully built around themselves.

And then there is Aiden Prince. I genuinely do not know how anyone could finish this book without falling completely in love with him. Still waters run deep, and Aiden embodies that saying perfectly. To everyone around him he appears cold, reserved, and almost intimidating, yet beneath that controlled exterior is one of the warmest heroes I have come across in a long time. He carries the immense responsibility of being the eldest son with quiet dignity, sacrificing many of his own dreams for the sake of his family while remaining remarkably upright in a world where privilege could easily have corrupted him.

I loved how inquisitive he was. He asks questions because he genuinely wants to understand, and when Emory speaks, he listens with complete attention. That simple quality made him incredibly attractive. Add to that his love of books, his glasses that give him serious hot professor energy, his filthy imagination reserved only for the woman he trusts, and the unwavering way he cares for Emory whenever she needs him, and he became the complete package. The scene where he looks after her when she falls ill completely sealed the deal for me. By the time Emory describes him as the best of men, I found myself wholeheartedly agreeing.

Emory proved to be every bit as compelling a heroine. She is sharp-tongued, stubborn, fiercely independent, and carries a chip on her shoulder that feels entirely understandable given everything she has endured. Beneath all of that fire, however, lies someone deeply vulnerable, scarred by both family history and a painful past relationship that has left her struggling to trust.

Watching those walls come down, piece by piece, as Aiden patiently draws her out of her shell, was immensely satisfying. Their relationship never feels one-sided. She challenges him just as much as he steadies her, and together they create a partnership that grows stronger with every chapter. The letter she writes towards the end of the novel was simply beautiful and became one of my favourite moments in the entire book.

The novel left me with even more questions about the Prince family, particularly Aiden’s unresolved trauma surrounding his father. Thankfully, this hopefully is a thread that will continue throughout the series, and I am genuinely excited to see where Sophia Travers takes it. More than anything, I simply wanted more time with these characters because I enjoyed their chaotic, hot as sin, and emotional journey so much.

Recommended for: Readers who love enemies-to-lovers romances, marriages of convenience, simmering sexual tension, emotionally reserved heroes with hidden depths, and couples whose relationship unfolds through quiet moments just as much as passionate ones.

Final Verdict: The Heir is proof that the loudest love stories are often told in whispers. Tender, addictive, and impossible to put down, it gave me one of my favourite book boyfriends of the year and left me eager for whatever awaits the Prince family next.

[Emory] His eyes glitter with unnamed emotion. His hand comes up to cradle my jaw. His breath feathers over my lips. This is really happening. My body clenches in anticipation.
He tilts my head and his lips meet his thumb. I taste the saltiness of his skin and the mint on his breath.
And then he stage-kisses the hell out of me.
It’s the best fake kiss that’s ever been bestowed. My stomach hollows out. With anger. Not disappointment. Never disappointment.
Asshole.

[Aiden] I want her to make that sound again, like she discovered desire for the first time and it’s my kiss that got her there.

[Aiden] It’s been a week since she admitted she had a crush on me when we were younger. I spent the entire week with what-ifs swirling in my head.
I woke up on Monday morning thinking I’d lost something on Sunday night. Something I didn’t even know I had. Emory could have been mine.

[Emory]“Everything okay?” Mateo’s voice comes from behind Aiden.
I open eyes I didn’t realize I’d shut. Aiden sighs before he presses his forehead to the stone, trapping me between his big body and the wall. I raise my hands to push him away, but instead, my traitorous fingers curl into his shirt. His chest is a firm wall of muscle beneath my hands. There’s an unfamiliar tug low inside me. I want to dig my nails into his skin. I want to tear at his shirt. I want Mateo to leave so Aiden will lick my neck again.
If this is what happens when I fight with my husband, I’ll fight with him every day.

[Aiden] She feels—my thoughts splinter briefly—so good. So fucking good. Like the first glass of water when I wake from a dream and realize I’m parched. I want to gulp, but I know I should force myself to savor.

[Emory] My every sense is full of Aiden, but worse, I can feel him creeping into my heart and laying claim. Just to the tiniest portion. Five measly cells with his name scrawled across it in that confident hand. In pen, of course, because once he’s certain of something, he writes it down.
His grip is firm but never cruel, his words rough but never mean, and when he comes, he buries his face in my neck and groans.

[Emory] You can’t tell me what to do.” I sound like I’m five years old, but I don’t have snappy comebacks today. I barely have a working brain today, but I do have a meeting with an architect.
“Funny.” He cocks his head. “You liked when I was telling you what to do last night. And you moaned my name like you were my real wife.” His tongue swipes over his bottom lip like he’s remembering exactly what made me moan. “So the way I see it, if you need someone to take care of you when you’re sick, that man is me.”

[Emory] “On the bed, wife,” he growls.
I scramble under the covers and pull them up to my chin. The mattress dips as he climbs on, then lifts the covers and curls around me. His hand lands on my hip, before he tucks me back against his chest. I can feel his heartbeat against my back, the smooth, hot skin of his stomach, the crisp hairs on his legs as he wedges one between mine.
“You like this?” he asks softly.
“I like it.” So much. Aiden is everywhere and he makes the world fall away.
“Good,” he whispers, his breath ruffling my hair. “I like it too.” His thumb drags over my hip, before a pleased sound rumbles up from his chest. “Sleeping with you will be fun.”
“Who taught you about fun?”
He tucks me closer, mouth to my ear.
“You did,” he whispers.

[Emory] “You ever think about after?” he asks after a few heartbeats.
Time pulls like taffy. My eyes are shut, and my consciousness is half on the sun, half on the goose bumps Aiden is raising with his fingers as he scratches his nails against my wrist.
“After what?”
“All this.” His voice is drowsy, but there’s a jolt inside me that I know would be stronger if I weren’t high.
I try to grasp the feelings I felt earlier—awkwardness, embarrassment, want—but they’ve floated away. All that’s left is the warmth of his hand, the closeness of his body, the scent of his skin.
No pressure.
No past.
“Sometimes,” I say. “I try not to.”
“Me too. I can feel my body counting down. Like there’s a doomsday clock inside my heart.”
He sounds wistful, and my chest aches briefly before the feeling floats away.
“I think that’s the weed,” I say dryly.

[Emory] “I liked competing with you,” he admits.
It’s my turn to let out a laugh. “No, you didn’t. You hated that I was better than you.”
He pushes up on to his elbow to look down at me. Clouds and sky are replaced with his thick hair, his finely arched brows, his green-gold eyes. “I loved competing with you,” he says, his gaze serious. “At home I was never enough. But with you? You looked at me like you wanted to destroy me, and I loved it.”

[Emory] “I don’t want to see him,” he says, his voice low and rough.
“My dad?”
“No. Your future husband.” He rolls onto his elbows, wedges a thigh between mine. His face is intent, all angles and planes tempered with the softness of his lips, the thick sweep of his lashes, the spill of his hair.
“There is no future husband.” I whisper the words, shivering at his nearness, at the hotness of his gaze, at the cage of his body.
“Good.” He grazes his nose over my neck. “Because I don’t know what I’d do if I met him.”
“You’d be a gentleman,” I say, my voice breathy and uncertain. I arch under Aiden.
“Like hell I would.” He growls the words in my ear.

[Emory] My stomach tumbles dangerously. The thought of keeping Aiden is dangerously seductive. “Two more weeks,” I whisper.
His head lifts. There’s fire in his gaze. “When you leave, I never want to meet your future husband. I will end him, Emory. Do you hear me?”
“Yes,” I say, my voice shaky. No one could ever compare to Aiden. I don’t want anyone else. I push my fingers through his hair, and his lids drop shut.
Two weeks can never be enough.

[Aiden] I want to keep her, but what if the best thing for her is to let her go?

[Aiden] “You think I’d measure up?” I prop myself up on an elbow so I can watch her face. She’s pink-cheeked and embarrassed as I press my fingers to the wrinkle between her brows.
“Aiden.” She sighs. “You took philosophy, right?”
I nod. “Summa cum laude, baby.”
She rolls her eyes. “You learned about Platonic ideals, right?”
“Sure. The ultimate form of something. The best version. Wait, are you saying—”
She squeezes her eyes shut in misery.
Warmth fills my chest. “Me?” I choke out the word. “I’m the best version?”
She pokes me in the side, her eyes shooting fire. “Were. Past tense.”
“Sure.” I flop back onto the bed, grinning. “Wow. Didn’t know you had it so bad for me, evil queen. Tell me, was it the glasses?”
“I hate you so much,” she whispers.
“Nah.” I can’t stop smiling. “You’re going to have to get a new line, because it sounds like you liked me very much.”
“Past tense,” she mutters again.
